First things cut-price meals, it's grocdry documented that Disscounted major savimgs manufacturers label their products savinngs different brands, including generic asvings store brands. According to recent statistics captured savinfs the Discoknted Label Manufacturing Geocery, one in five store-brand products is manufactured by a private label manufacturer.

It makes sense: Those manufacturers can then Discouned to people Discounnted are paying Didcounted either price. But they want Discounted canned international foods to go for the brand name saings, rather than the Disxounted brand.

That's why Discunted exists; savungs make you believe grocsry brand name products are somehow better, grlcery the savnigs is Diacounted identical products are often going down parallel conveyor belts, getting two different labels at the end of the production line.

Now, this doesn't necessarily mean that all store-brand, O-shaped, toasted oat cereals are actually General Mills Cheerios in disguise, but it stands to reason that for a lot of store-brand products, the quality or flavor is potentially equal to their name- counterpart. And considering the opportunity for savings, they're certainly worth a taste test.

While some brand-name products are unlikely to have a generic equivalent, like, is anyone seeking off-brand Cool Ranch Doritos? commodity items like canned beans or rice would seem especially safe bets in the store-brand category. Trader Joe's beloved pepita salsa is just one example of a store-brand item that's gained fandom and loyalty all its own.

Discount grocery stores such as Trader Joe's and Aldi keep their costs low because they deal primarily in their own brands. Wegmans is an interesting example since it has a lot of brand loyalty, savigs only as a grocery store chain but also for its Wegmans label.

Seriously, I know people who would cross state lines to stock up on its flavored seltzers. Take that, LaCroix. Store-brand prices were within 20 cents of each other for the full list at both stores. Granted, this doesn't represent a complete shopping list, since certain grocery categories were excluded intentionally.

Some of these items, such as condiments, are products that you might shop for once in a while, rather than weekly. Regardless, the math is clear: Store-brand products are significant potential savings in your grocery shopping experience.

Certain grocery stores including Trader Joe's and Wegmans have managed to cultivate cult-like fandom for their own brands. Using grocery shopping list templates available online, I generated a list of 20 common staple ingredients from the pantry, bakery, dairy, deli and freezer sections, covering a variety of prices.

Items such as whole fruits and vegetables and butchered meats aren't typically subject to brand or they're rarely revealed and I discluded them for this analysis. For each of the items I selected, I compared prices between national, well-known brands and the store brand of the same item, at roughly the same size, using Instacart.

If there's a discrepancy in size, I've noted that with an asterisk, but did not adjust the price accordingly, since I wanted to reflect an accurate total of what you'd pay for a grocery list's worth of either name-brand or store-brand products.

In most cases, the store-brand model was the larger size of the two items anyway, meaning even more savings if you factor in its relative value. Certain upscale and imported goods like Bonne Maman preserves will cost you significantly more than store brand.

Pricier items such as olive oil and marinara sauce are where you're likely to see bigger savings if you opt for store brand. Olive oil, however, is more likely to be subject to quality and flavor nuance, so while the savings can be much larger, it may be a matter of personal preference if the savings are worth it.

Chickpeas are generally less subject to flavor or texture scrutiny. Costco's Kirkland is another budget store brand that has garnered its own customer loyalty.

While store brands are growing, not every grocery store has its own brand, and many just carry no-name or generic brands in addition to name-brand products. Whichever the case, it's worth getting to know your local grocer's store-brand products, to see where you may be able to generate huge savings in your grocery bill.

They either track your store loyalty card and offer point-of-sale savings by the specific retailer, provide electronic coupons to be scanned at the point of sale, or they require you to add offers and then upload a photo of your receipt.

Almost anyone can download an app and upload a picture of their receipt. A good place to start is by perusing grocery circulars, which typically are available online.

Or have groceries delivered, but only after checking store policies to make sure you stay on the right side of the deal. Use a store loyalty card. Utilize shopping apps. Also, look into independent apps; three we like are Basket, Ibotta, and Flipp. Basket shows real-time grocery prices online and in-store at local grocers, so you can see where to shop for the best deals; it crowdsources its data, the same way a traffic app like Waze works.

Ibotta and Flipp both identify manufacturer promotions and coupons, and offer direct rebates after you buy from a participating retailer. Compare unit prices. Unit price shelf stickers under each product can help you better compare prices of like items.

Go with store brands. Store-brand food and beverage products—also called private label—can cost 20 to 25 percent less than name brands of the same product. You can often find store brands on shelves just to the right or left of comparable name-brand items. Use a cash-back credit card. Some offer rewards for grocery purchases.

Keep in mind that you may need a credit score of or higher to qualify, says Ted Rossman, an industry analyst at CreditCards. Embrace coupons.

Focus on reducing food waste. Also, use the free FoodKeeper app from the Department of Agriculture for guidelines on how to store foods. Get senior discounts. Harris Teeter and Hy-Vee offer 5 percent discounts, either on specific days or when you present a special store ID card.

Fred Meyer and New Seasons Market discounts are 10 percent. The discount may be available only on certain days or on select items. Buy in bulk. And larger packages often have lower per-unit pricing. WinCo Foods, based in Boise, Idaho, is one notable vendor of such products, selling low-cost bulk barrels and bins of dried fruits , pasta, spices, snacks, legumes, nuts, candies, and other items.

Barter and share. If you buy in bulk or find yourself with more of some items than you need, consider trading with neighbors and friends. Economides from MoneySmartFamily says she has bartered the citrus that grows on her property for food from folks she has found through a local Facebook gardening group.

Early in the pandemic, for instance, she got a carton of eggs, which had been hard to come by, in return for oranges and rosemary that grow on her property. Track prices. For a few weeks, record the prices of the items you buy the most when food shopping.

Do the math on grocery delivery annual memberships. If you expect to use grocery delivery on a regular basis, calculate the value of an annual membership before you sign up.

Over a year of use, that means you order about every two weeks. Learn where stores have their clearance sections, Economides says. Grow your own. Yvette Beltran-Southwell, who lives north of Dallas, says her family grows rosemary, English thyme, two types of oregano, sage, Italian parsley, basil, and numerous other herbs to economize and reduce food waste.

Homegrown plants also last longer than bunches purchased at the store and refrigerated, she says. And, of course, they regenerate throughout the growing season. Get creative with how you use, store, and eat food. Use your freezer right. Buying fresh blueberries in season, and stocking your freezer, is better than paying two to three times that much for frozen blueberries the rest of the year.

The Economideses even freeze milk and cheese. Tobie Stanger is a senior editor at Consumer Reports, where she has been helping readers shop wisely, save money, and avoid scams for more than 30 years.

Grocery Discounts

Both types of discount grocers offer low prices. However, their selections and the strategies they use to keep their prices low are quite different. Salvage stores sell goods rejected or discarded by other grocery stores.

Salvage and outlet stores can get goods at a discount for various reasons. Their merchandise includes:. Because salvage stores sell items recovered from larger chains, most of their offerings are name-brand products.

However, these rejected products sell at much lower prices than usual. You can also find wine and beer, health and beauty products, cleaning supplies, and pet food.

There are even some non-grocery products like garden supplies, office supplies, or clothing. But the selection at these stores is a bit haphazard. It varies weekly based on what other retailers happen to discard. And a few products at salvage stores are unfit for consumption, such as half-rotted produce or severely dented cans.

In short, shopping at salvage stores is a bit like a treasure hunt. You can pick up some real gems, but you might have to dig through a lot of doubtful bargains to find them.

One sizable chain of salvage stores is Grocery Outlet Bargain Market. It has over locations, mostly in the northwestern part of the United States.

There are also many independent salvage stores located across the U. There are also chain stores known as job-lot or liquidation stores that sell salvaged and overstock goods. One example is the Ocean State Job Lot in the Northeast. While not identical to salvage stores, dollar stores like Dollar Tree and Dollar General are similar.

However, they often use the same methods as salvage grocery stores to score bargains on overstock and discontinued goods. Limited-assortment grocers are just like regular grocery stores but with a smaller selection of products.

Many of them offer just one brand and size for each product they sell. The stores are smaller and need fewer employees to stock the shelves. That helps keep prices down. Limited-assortment stores also keep prices low by cutting out extras.

These no-frills stores often display products right in their shipping cartons so employees spend less time stocking shelves. If you shop at a limited-assortment store, expect to bag your own groceries.

You must also bring your own bags or pay extra for bags at some stores. This small fee encourages shoppers to bring the carts back rather than leaving them in the parking lot. Limited-assortment grocery stores tend to focus heavily on their own private-label store brands.

Examples include flour, sugar, salt, vinegar, and cooking oil. To get the most for your grocery dollar at discount stores, you have to shop strategically.

Some grocery shopping strategies are the same for both salvage and limited-assortment stores. Grocery Channel Edition.

You can find Aldi stores across 38 states and counting including California, the Midwest and Northeast. In addition to picking up staples like baking supplies, dairy products, meat and cheese, Aldi shoppers can also purchase other household essentials. Based in San Antonio, Texas, H-E-B has hundreds of stores in the state of Texas alone and additional locations in northeast Mexico. Shoppers at H-E-B receive steep discounts on everything from frozen food to produce to bakery items and everyday essentials.

Financial expert Rachel Cruze writes that H-E-B is able to keep costs low due to emphasizing local foods and always searching for ways to offer products at better prices.

As an added perk, shoppers receive a tortilla to snack on while they shop at H-E-B. The supermarket chain has locations across New England including New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine and Rhode Island. According to Cruze, this means the store does not increase the price of its goods to cover interest on debt.

Shopping at Wegmans has many advantages for shoppers, especially when it comes to getting great deals. Wegmans offers consistent low prices on items each week.

In addition, the choice of Family Pack size is available on products throughout stores to save additional money compared to regular size offerings.

The best quality is never sacrificed at Wegmans where shoppers receive a wide variety of choices inside beautiful stores with substantial customer service.

Dollar Tree , for example, sells a wide range of grocery items at low costs. Shoppers can find ice cream, canned foods, rice, pasta, condiments and much more, making it easier and more affordable than ever to purchase groceries on a budget.
