To start, sip on Pisco Sour and pick from South American classics like empanadas, yucca, and tostones. There is always a delicious selection hearty soups and stews, and the mains are all served with a generous portion of rice and beans. Gathering our bearings, we found a mother and daughter team making dumplings jiaozi by hand at a tiny shop about the width of a doorway. We popped in and ordered a tray of perfectly steamed minced meat and herb-stuffed dumplings. Then we ordered a plate of fried dumplings.

And we returned every day for the next few days to try everything in the house. These dumplings were easily among the the best we eaten in all of China, if not the best — and we ate a lot of dumplings.

Still shocked looks when we call out Georgian food as one of our favorite cuisines. More reading: Georgian Food Round Up. In much of South America, empanadas are the go-to, especially when traveling on-the-go and on the cheap in Argentina. But the empanadas in Argentina's Salta region take the whole stuffed dough pocket thing to a whole new level.

In these parts, there was something about the slightly flaky dough that was notches above repurposed pizza crust you might get elsewhere in Argentina. Perhaps most importantly, folks in Salta actually enjoy spice, so hot sauces were plentiful everywhere we went.

One of our favorite places: La Casa de las Empanadas in Cafayate. They over a dozen varieties of empanada in and watch the women in the back roll the dough fresh for over a dozen varieties. Who would have thought that sitting on tiny kingergarten-sized plastic stools slurping pho bo, Vietnamese beef soup, in Vietnamese winter could be so satisfying?

We do. Fresh herbs thrown on top of steaming long-cooked broth create a steam bath of savory goodness. It's all culinary balance, from the savory beef broth to the sweets of star anise and Asian basil. In Central Asia, food is not a strong point, but we did grow to love plov — rice mixed with vegetables, meat and spices.

Of all the plov we sampled, Uzbekistan featured the best in the region. Our favorite came from Flamingo, a simple little restaurant in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent. We take almost every visitor who comes to Berlin to Tadim at Kottbusser Tor because it really does serve an almost perfect Turkish Pizza lahmacun — freshly rolled out flat bread dough covered with a thin layer of herbed and lightly spiced minced meat gets cooked in the oven just so.

The resulting dough is topped with freshly cut lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and parsley, then rolled and tucked. The so what is this. The cover your culinary ass caveat: Prices are accurate at the time of consumption. Happy eating! My most memorable would have to be Ayvalik toast in Turkey — a toasted sandwich stuffed with pickle, sausage, lettuce, tomatoes and French fries, slathered in sauce.

The woman at the stand used to call her Red Lipstick Ajumma I used to get it from always gave me free fried stuff on top to go with it. Not sure what the fried stuff was, but it tasted gooood! I would agree with you that Dosa is one of the most memorable dishes of India not just South India!

I love it! I found a South Indian Tamil restaurant which is actually a small chain in the US NorthEast. Best dosa ever! They make it like in India, the masala is fantastic, the dosa crispy and nutty and made into a triangle with the masala inside, a hint of ghee clarified butter on the dosa and condiments to die for!!

The restaurant specializes in Chettinad cuisine of Tamil Nadu. Ah, dosas! We have you to thank for the Casa de las Empanadas recommendation in Cafayate — they were so good and had some creative veggie options. That Turkish pizza looks amazing, and a surprising cheap eat for Germany. Just reading this post had my mouth watering, the Empanadas all through South America really were great, Empanadas de Queso were my favourite- simple, cheap and and delicious- perfect for on-the-go as you said.

Thanks for the great post! Love the photos and descriptions! Steamed pork buns in Asia were another one of my cheap and delicious favorites.

Chinese dumplings definitely top my list! Even in Shanghai they are pretty cheap. I could eat buckets of them! The hawker centers of Singapore and izakayas of Japan are great places to feast on the cheap. Well most of them look delicious, so it would most definitely be worth saving the money. We have a lot of delicious food around here Portugal , but you would have a very hard time finding any deals like these.

It does give an idea where one might be able to afford to travel to, even if the plane costs more. I just crossed the border between Cambodia and Thailand and while I was forced to wait for a bus that never existed, dollar pad Thai was my savior. Fresh spring rolls in Vietnam, about eight for a dollar, were by far the best.

This list is making me hungry! One of my faves is the Nicaraguan guirila, a thick corn tortilla wrapped in banana leaves and stuffed with fresh cuajada cheese, 9 cordobas about 45 cents apiece.

Food is one of my favourite things about travel, and almost everywhere I have been the food has been so much cheaper than here in Australia. Travelling through Asia was just delightful with all of the cheap street food everywhere 🙂 Great post! Great post. You just named all my favourites in SEA, Thais, Myanmar and Vietnam!

Even in Malaysia, you can eat for maybe USD1. Great post… loved the shot of the Mandalay Chapati! Tom: I figured Korea and Taiwan both would feature in feedback on this list. Thanks for sharing your your low-budget, high-value world cuisine dining experiences.

Sutapa: Glad you liked it. A small chain the U. Try the bacalao , too — the national dish of salted cod that you can find everywhere. For a sweet ending to your meal, try pasteis de nata , a sweet egg custard pie that goes well with porto and coffee. If you are looking for super cheap food, you can grab a filling authentic meal for as little as a dollar in Egypt.

Egypt also has a surprising variety of sweets, from basbousa , a semolina cake, to the baklava-like kanoufa. A plate of these sweets can be bought for a dollar as well.

M ombar mahshy. Technically this dish hails from nearby Malaysia, but Indonesian variants, which often include a rich rendang meat stew, pervade the islands. The dish starts with sweet coconut rice that has been cooked with the fragrant pandan leaves, pickled onion, chili mixture, sliced fresh cucumbers, and hard-boiled egg.

Add a big piece of toasted bread with palm sugar and butter and a mug of Indonesian coffee and you have the best way to start your day!

I always wondered why every Crock-Pot cookbook contains a recipe for bean stew, because what's so hard about making that on the stove top? While researching this article I discovered the reason why: Cholentthe traditional bean stew enjoyed by Jews on four continents as their Sabbath lunch, is the very reason for the Crock-Pot's existence.

Irving Naxonan American inventor, was inspired by his mother's story of cuisihe up Jewish in Lithuania. Every Friday, gloobal Jewish ladies in her town would bring a crock of stew to the local bakery.

Since observant Jews do not do any work during Sabbath, which includes turning on the stove, it's hard for them to get a hot lunch on the table on Saturdays. So instead of cooking at home, the Jewish ladies would put their pots of Gglobal into the still hot coals of the village bakery's oven, and the residual heat would be enough to slow-cook the meals over the next 24 hours.

Naxon wondered if there was a way to electrify a crock so Jewish moms, without access to a wood-fired bread oven, could have a similar, slow-cook, no work-around.

Thus, the Crock-Pot was born. How many staple foods have their own song? Colcannon, the traditional Irish dish made from mashed potatoes and kale, used to be a year-round staple, but is now a Affordsble associated with Halloween in part because that's the height of kale and cabbage season in Ireland.

Like King Cake on Epiphany, colcannon on Halloween doubles as a fortune-telling xuisine. On Halloween, a ring, a button, a thimble, and a coin are hidden in the Colcannon. The person who finds the AAffordable will be the next to marry, while the button and the thimble mean bachelorhood or spinsterhood for the next year.

Ful Medames is the national dish of Egypt. The Aztecs named the gray and black fungus that grows on corn huitlacochewhich literally translates to "raven's poop. In the United States, corn smut is a horrific plant blight. But to Mexicans, Hopi Indians, and James Beard who tried unsuccessfully tried to rename it corn trufflehuitlacoche Affordablw a delicacy.

Huitlacoche has a complex, smoky flavor and, like truffles and garlic, it's one of those ingredients that make everything taste so much better. Since non-Mexican chefs have finally discovered what the Aztecs called "The Food of the Gods" years ago, corn smut is now grown commercially as swanky, gourmet produce.

Obviously, the cheapest way to procure huitlacoche is to harvest it for free from a local corn grower who thinks glonal disgusting, or salvage it from your own garden. Huitlacoche is my favorite quesadilla topping.

But, when I am lucky enough to find it fresh, I make Nanha which is what the Hopis call corn smut by parboiling it for ten minutes and then sauteing it in butter until crisp. Fortunately, over-fermented kimchi is the magic ingredient in Kimchi Fried Riceone of those great dishes made from leftovers. Kosharyalso spelled Koshari, Kushari, and Kosheri, is the quintessential Egyptian dish made from a carb-tastic blend of rice and not one, but two types of pasta; and topped with beans, fried onions, and tomato sauce.

It's wildly popular; there are hundreds of roadside stands and restaurants that specialize in the dish found throughout the country. Koshary is Egypt's version of Cincinnati Chili or Thursday Night Soup. It's a flexible recipe that working class Egyptian families use to stretch pantry odds and ends into one last, tasty meal before payday.

Cook's Note: Traditionally, the vinegar marinade for the chickpeas is also used as a condiment for the finished dish. Think of it as the Egyptian-style Tabasco Sauce.

I've never actually seen anyone buy this product at my grocery store, but there's an entire shelf of canned sardines in tomato sauceso there must be a market for it. Okay, to be honest, I've bought sardines in tomato sauce in the past, but only use it to bait traps to capture feral cats in need of fixing.

It's cheaper than cat food! Recently, a large can of Sardines in Salsa Roja mysteriously showed up in my kitchen.

No one is fessing up to leaving it behind. Since I Afgordable no cats to capture, I decided that I would, Afforddable and for all, find a recipe that would make this canned fish suitable for consumption by me.

Oh my gosh! This Dominican recipe for Rice and Spicy Sardines is delicious. About The Author. Marie Doyon Email Marie Doyon. Marie Doyon Website. In the Ivory Coast, the fried plantains are topped with everything from chili peppers to onions to fried egg to tomato sauce, and served for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

It should be noted, however, that unlike tostones , the Puerto Rican dish that uses green plantains, Alloco is best made with really ripe plantains. Wait for the peel to get completely black to ensure the sweetest flavor.

Since plantains are also a staple food throughout the Caribbean, Central and South America, Oceania, and South East Asia, look for them in Latin or Asian markets.

Paella is a rice dish that originated in Valencia, Spain and is the dish that most non-Spaniards associate with the country. Although 18th century paella recipes called for water vole, a type of rodent, as one of the main ingredients, over time paella has become a pricey dish with the addition of expensive ingredients like saffron, duck, and shrimp.

Arroz a banda is a staple rice dish of Spanish fishermen from Alicante to Murcia. With its crunchy crust and intense fishy flavor, arroz a banda is paella's scrappy, country cousin. Most traditional arroz a banda recipes start with boiling a fish or fish parts in water with spices to make a broth.

Once the broth is made, the fish is removed and set aside as the main course. Rice and vegetables are then added to the fish broth and cooked down to make arroz a banda. Since yummy fish broth can be made from cheap fish or from fish heads, fish bones, and shrimp shells, arroz a banda falls into the budget category even with the addition of saffron.

If you have a fish market nearby, negotiate a cheap price with your local fishmonger for the heads and bones. Bobotie pronounced ba-boor-tea is the national dish of South Africa. Similar to Greek moussaka , bobotie is a curried meat casserole topped with a baked cream sauce.

Although it can contain some high-ticket grocery items like dried fruit or nuts, South Africans have as many recipes for bobotie as Minnesotans have for hotdish. Be sure to read through the comments on the linked bobotie recipe, for alternate versions of this classic dish.

My Afghan-American Agricultural Inspector compares his homeland's vegetable-filled turnovers to tamales: They are often communally prepared holiday treats. Although they are hand-labor intensive, bulani recipes elevate inexpensive ingredients like onions, potatoes, and pumpkin use up that Halloween jack-o-lantern , so the kitchen prep is worth it.

Bulani are extra delicious when served with fresh yogurt and chatni sauce , a spicy pesto. I always wondered why every Crock-Pot cookbook contains a recipe for bean stew, because what's so hard about making that on the stove top?

While researching this article I discovered the reason why: Cholent , the traditional bean stew enjoyed by Jews on four continents as their Sabbath lunch, is the very reason for the Crock-Pot's existence. Irving Naxon , an American inventor, was inspired by his mother's story of growing up Jewish in Lithuania.

Every Friday, the Jewish ladies in her town would bring a crock of stew to the local bakery. Since observant Jews do not do any work during Sabbath, which includes turning on the stove, it's hard for them to get a hot lunch on the table on Saturdays.

So instead of cooking at home, the Jewish ladies would put their pots of Cholent into the still hot coals of the village bakery's oven, and the residual heat would be enough to slow-cook the meals over the next 24 hours. Naxon wondered if there was a way to electrify a crock so Jewish moms, without access to a wood-fired bread oven, could have a similar, slow-cook, no work-around.

Thus, the Crock-Pot was born. How many staple foods have their own song? Colcannon, the traditional Irish dish made from mashed potatoes and kale, used to be a year-round staple, but is now a dish associated with Halloween in part because that's the height of kale and cabbage season in Ireland.

Like King Cake on Epiphany, colcannon on Halloween doubles as a fortune-telling device. On Halloween, a ring, a button, a thimble, and a coin are hidden in the Colcannon.

The person who finds the ring will be the next to marry, while the button and the thimble mean bachelorhood or spinsterhood for the next year. The coin means that the finder will come into wealth. Please note: all four charms are all potential tooth-breaking and choking hazards, so add them at your own risk.

A related potato and cabbage budget dish is Boerenkool Stamppot , a traditional Dutch recipe made from kale and potatoes, that is served with brown gravy and applesauce. Ful Medames is the national dish of Egypt.

Although this fava bean salad with lemon garlic dressing is traditionally a breakfast food in the Middle East, Egyptians eat it at all hours of the day. I like to mash the cooked beans with a fork and then spread the chunky paste on pita bread to stretch my food budget even further.

The Aztecs named the gray and black fungus that grows on corn huitlacoche , which literally translates to "raven's poop. In the United States, corn smut is a horrific plant blight. But to Mexicans, Hopi Indians, and James Beard who tried unsuccessfully tried to rename it corn truffle , huitlacoche is a delicacy.

Obviously, the cheapest way to procure huitlacoche is to harvest it for free from a local corn grower who thinks it's disgusting, or salvage it from your own garden. Huitlacoche is my favorite quesadilla topping.

But, when I am lucky enough to find it fresh, I make Nanha which is what the Hopis call corn smut by parboiling it for ten minutes and then sauteing it in butter until crisp. I love sour pickles, so it wasn't until a Korean friend pointed out that my Kimchi had gone sour that I realized that it was even possible to over-ferment something.

But come on, some pickled vegetables don't get really good until they start getting fizzy, am I right? Fortunately, over-fermented kimchi is the magic ingredient in Kimchi Fried Rice , one of those great dishes made from leftovers.

The preparation is simple: chop the kimchi into coleslaw-sized bits, then saute in butter. Once the kimchi is cooked to your liking, add the cooked rice.

You can also add spices and a fried egg at your discretion. Koshary , also spelled Koshari, Kushari, and Kosheri, is the quintessential Egyptian dish made from a carb-tastic blend of rice and not one, but two types of pasta; and topped with beans, fried onions, and tomato sauce.

I've never actually seen anyone buy this product at my grocery store, but there's an entire shelf of canned sardines in tomato sauce , so there must be a market for it.

Since I had no cats to capture, I decided that I would, once and for all, find a recipe that would make this canned fish suitable for consumption by me.
