I was presented with an interesting challenge just before Christmas. One of my clients had a late commission from BBC Radio 4 to produce a documentary on the anniversary of the one millionth Morris Minor car. The finale to the programme, which was transmitted on Christmas Eve, was to be a rendition of 'Jingle Bells' using only the sounds of a Morris Minor. This was a challenge worth rising to, as I wanted to produce a better attempt than Top Gear had managed when they tried to recreate their theme tune using car sounds.

Each Affordable cuisine deals Pro Tools samples key is struck with the mallet on the balafon, it rings out for a fixed and quite brief length of time.

Similarly, we want to try and make sure that the full sample plays out every time a key is hit. This is done from the amplitude envelope in the sampler.

This module also controls how much variation there is when triggering a sample at its lowest and highest velocity position. In addition to sampling any unusual instruments you come across, you can also create unique, custom instruments from any sounds you might happen to record.

The more you experiment with sound design, the more sounds you might come across that you want to be able to create entire instruments from. Sampling enables you to pitch-shift even a single example across a whole range of notes to create custom instruments. Our Pro Tools project this issue contains a single instrument channel with an instance of UVI Falcon in the first plug-in slot.

The sample drag-and-drop window allows you to select the mapping method and layer. Select it, and Layer 1 as the destination, and press OK. This maps our 16 notes onto their keys and places the velocity layers into evenly spaced groups of four.

We can fill in the missing notes by highlighting each sample and dragging it out to fill the gaps. Take the next set of four samples that make up the B and drag the edge of those one semitone to the left.

At the extremes of the range, the lowest and highest samples could be stretched out to fill as much as you require — but remember, the further you pitch-shift the notes, the less realistic they are likely to sound.

You should be able to play just over three octaves from your keyboard, with different velocities triggering different strengths. We can tune this to your playing style, if you want the loudest sample to trigger on the loudest of velocities.

Fill in the missing space by highlighting the third-loudest velocity layer and dragging the top of these up to meet the top velocity layer. You could further fine-tune this by adjusting the first and second velocity layers.

Now highlight all of the sample layers in the mapping editor and scroll down to the amp envelope in the Modulation section. Notes will ring out unless muted or hit again.

Highlight all the notes and select Auto Extend Key Ranges from the right-click pop-up menu. The default position seems to work, with 0 attack and a lengthy Hold parameter. But we can save on system resources in polyphonic performances if we reduce the Hold to something a little more realistic.

We can improve the dynamic expressiveness of the instrument further if we increase the Velocity Amount parameter of the AHD envelope. This ties the strength of the velocity to the strength of the played signal.

Save the program in a suitable location on your drive, and give it a suitable name. You will now be able to recall it, ready for use in your next project.

Sampling With Structure

hey man, I've wondered about this as well, in normal circumstances the default is appropriate samples for audio and ticks for midi. Like you said its all to do with how your Tempo map and how regions or midi notes interact with changing tempos. Ticks midi notes will interact relatively with the tempo map, so if you slow it right down, the notes will move in accordance, spacing them selves out.

this is obviously beneficial since all your midi performances will transfer if you want to mess around with the tempo a bit. Samples audio regions interact in an absolute manner with the timeframe, so no matter what you do with the tempo the regions will stay exactly where there are and not change at all.

because your working with recorded audio, you normally don't want anything to mess with it. but if you are using a rex file or something that is all chopped up at every beat then you can switch an audio track to 'ticks' and it will be locked relatively to the beats and bars, instead of absolutely to the min and sec time frame.

so when you slow that song right down, your chopped up audio beats will space out and stay in time with the track all all the 'ticks' midi. you can of course use samples on your midi to stick it to the absolute time frame, if you wanna mess with the tempo, but not mess up how your performance syncs with the audio in your session.

Recording a Snare Drum There are an infinite number of things you work with like this, for example hand claps. You can import an audio sample of anything to a PT audio track using the Import feature off the menu.

If you want to play a sample as an instrument, then you need some kind of sampler virtual instrument that allows you to import your own samples. I believe you can do that with Structure Free, which you may have installed with your version of Pro Tools already though what system you're using you didn't say.

With any sampling VI, Structure Free or other one, you can simply import a sample, and then assign it to a key or range of keys in order to use your MIDI controller to play the sample via the virtual instrument.

If you can give more info about what you want to do and what you have to work with, maybe we can give you a bit more help. If you have PT 10, then you should have Structure Free. You will see that it has picked up some extra bits as well, so next it's worth losing the unwanted bits and naming the samples. In this example, I used Shuffle edit mode to delete the unwanted sections, as well as the duff A-string samples, then named each clean sample including the note name, as this will help later.

Here I've used Pro Tools' Separate Region At Transients function, followed by some editing in Shuffle mode, to create a series of regions each containing one note.

Incidentally, at some zoom levels it looks as if Pro Tools has missed some of the transients and placed the edits after the start of the notes. This is a display issue in Pro Tools 8, and you can confirm there are no problems by zooming in and seeing that all is as it should be.

Now it's time to put the samples into Structure. If you haven't already done so, create a stereo Instrument track and insert an instance of Structure into one of the five insert slots.

Structure will open with a default 'Sine Wave' patch — but personally I don't know why Avid put this patch in, as the first thing I do is remove it! Now we have an empty instance of Structure to put our new samples into.

The obvious thing to do is to drag the edited and named samples from the audio track into the Structure window, and this does work — nearly. However, there are some problems with this approach. In the screen below left When I drag my regions into Structure from the Pro Tools Edit window, Structure can't pick up the root note from the Region name.

I have done just that, but end up with problems relating to the root key, which is the natural pitch the sample was played at. Notice how the Root Key column in the table is set to 'B2' for all the samples: even with Set Root Key set to 'From Name', the Root Key isn't picked up.

Even Exporting the File's Regions Definitions doesn't help. Save them somewhere useful, and then drag those files from the Mac Finder or Windows Explorer into the Structure window. You'll see that this time Structure picks up the Root Key info from the file names This time I've used the Export Regions As Files option in the Region List and dragged the files into the Structure window.

The next step is to configure the Key Zone section at the bottom. Tick the 'By Root Key' box and then choose how you want it filled. In situations like this, where you don't have a sample for every note, you can choose the samples you do have to be assigned to all the notes up to the next sample Fill Up or down to the next lowest one Fill Down , but I prefer Fill Centre so that no sample is stretched too far.

Click OK and you'll be able to see what Structure has done. By default, Structure has named my patch 'New Patch' and the sub-patch after the name of the first sample.

Recording a Snare Drum. There are an infinite number of things you work with like this, for example hand claps. I casually gather everyone in the studio, have them stand around a microphone, stare them dead in the eye, and ask them to clap in time with the song.

If you have a friend who is a drummer, ask them to come over to jam out for a few hours while you record them. Order some pizza, have some fun. Regardless of any additional processing, you will no doubt have to edit and fine tune your samples.

Make sure to edit your samples before exporting. This will separate your selection from the rest of the audio file as well as create a new sub-clip in the Clip List as seen in the pic below. Naming and organization of your samples is the only way to keep track of everything you have going on, especially after several years of doing this type of thing.

Rename Clip by Right-Clicking. Rename Clip dialogue window. A simple reason for this is to allow clean-up of the beginning or end of the audio file so there are no unnecessary clicks or pops in the audio.

Fade-out applied to end of audio files before export. Remember, any edits or processing you do in a Pro Tools session only applies to that particular session.

The answer depends on whether or not you are applying any type of processing plug-ins such as eq, dynamics or not. This will ensure that any changes made to tone or dynamics are printed to a new audio file created on your hard drive.

Make sure to select the file, or files, you want to Export. Remember your friend the drummer you had pizza with? Once we move beyond the act of creating new samples, it is a very good idea to stay as organized as possible. It is very likely you will have hundreds or thousands of different files, making sure you can easily access them becomes critical.

Pro Tools has built-in functionality via the Workspace window that allows you to organize your files, create catalogs, and access information from multiple hard drives at once, all in one place. Repeat as necessary. Make sure to give it a name.

The purpose of these catalogs is to allow you to organize files necessary to your workflow regardless of where they might live on a hard drive.
